Restless

Night falls and Mac returns to the campsite, choosing to lie down on the sand at the front of the canopy instead of actually inside with me. I tell myself I don’t care, but I’m lying. I don’t want to be alone right now and having a strong, good looking guy to protect me seems like a far better idea than being alone. I pull the silver foil emergency blanket out and look over the instructions to distract myself. It says its for single use only, but it also says you can use it to line the inside of a tent or shelter to aid in keeping the area warm. It doesn’t take me long to pin it up on the inside of the shelter. I lay back down, casting a glare at Mac as he shakes his head and rolls over, facing the dwindling fire.

As I lay there, shivering, I can feel the sand digging into my skin. I close my eyes and try to relax, but my mind is racing. I can hear the waves crashing on the shore and the sound of Mac’s breathing. He’s asleep now, and I can’t help but wonder what he’s dreaming about.

Suddenly, I hear a rustling sound coming from the bushes nearby. My heart starts racing as I realize that there’s someone or something out there. I sit up and try to make out what it is, but it’s too dark to see anything.

“Mac,” I whisper, nudging him gently. “Wake up.”

He stirs, groggily opening his eyes. “What’s wrong?” he mutters.

“I think there’s something out there,” I reply, pointing towards the back of the shelter.

Mac sits up, immediately alert. “Stay here,” he says, grabbing a thick branch off the ground.

“No, I’m coming with you.”

“Nina, stay here where it’s safe.”

“No!”

“For fucks sake Nina, just this once, do as I fucking say.” Stunned into silence, I simply sit here watching him disappear into the darkness, feeling both frightened and grateful for his protection. My heart is beating so fast that I can hear it in my ears, and I hold my breath, waiting for something to happen.

Seconds pass, and then minutes. I start to wonder if it was just my imagination, but then I hear a low growling sound. My blood runs cold, and I realize that there really is something out there. I slip out from under the silver blanket, trying to be as quiet as possible, and follow the sound of Mac’s footsteps. It feels like it takes forever to reach him, when I finally do, I find him crouched down behind a bush, staring at something near what looks like a stream. Kneeling down beside him, I whisper, “What is it?”

“A pig.” My stomach rumbles at his words. “Exactly my thoughts.” Mac smirks at my stomach’s growling. Ignoring him making fun of my empty stomach, I ask, “How do we catch it?”

“Can pigs swim?”

“I guess we’re about to find out. On the count of three, we jump out and chase it into the water.
